Three simple rules to start a game well.

1. Control the centre

The squares d4, e4, d5 and e5 matter most: pawns and pieces controlling them have more influence.

2. Develop your pieces

Bring out the knights and bishops before moving the same piece several times. Avoid bringing the queen out too early.

3. Keep the king safe

Castle early to protect your king and connect your rooks.
